ACADEMIC ACTIVITY

19 th CENTURY

1838: Josep Llausás, first director of the Companyia de Cant.
1841: The first public performances took place in March.
1847: The Gran Teatro del Liceu was inaugurated with a group of musicians and singers from the faculty of the Liceo Filo-Dramático.
1866: Josep Arteaga became maestrino of voice, and was the first graduate of the Conservatory to become a professor of the Institution.
1884: Pere Tintorer, father of the Catalonian Piano School, was appointed professor of the Conservatory for the first time –although he was surely already one.
1885: Engelbert Humperdinck was appointed professor of harmony, counterpoint and fugue. A year later he had to leave due to health problems.
1889: Gabriel Balart succeeded director Mariano Obiols, when he died.
1893: Francesc de Paula Sánchez Cavagnach became director after Gabriel Balart died.
1893: Antoni Nicolau was appointed professor of harmony and composition.
1896: Pau Casals became Cello professor at the Conservatory.

20 th CENTURY

1913: Adrià Gual is chosen director of the Escola Catalana d'Art Dramàtic, created by the Conservatory with the collaboration of the Diputació Provincial de Barcelona. Enric Giménez and Pompeu Fabra became professors.
1914: Joaquim Zamacois, graduate from the Conservatory, became professor of harmony, counterpoint, fugue and composition.
1915: Lluisa Pierrik became voice professor.
1919: Sánchez Cavagnach died and Joan Lamote de Grignon was designated director.
1928: Higini Anglès was incorporated to the Liceu as a musicology professor.
1931: After Joan Lamote's resigned, Josep Barbera is nominated interim director. Four years later he was appointed director.
1933: Marta Grau became professor of declamation.
1933: Jaume Pahissa became professor of esthetic and history of culture.
1933: Graciano Tarragó started his guitar lessons at the Conservatory.
1935: Dolors Frau started teaching voice at the Conservatory.
1938: Lamote de Grignon returned as a director after the end of the Civil War.
1938: The conducting program was created with Lamote de Grignon as main professor.
1939: Once the Civil War ended the faculty was reorganized with the professors that were able to teach again.
1945: Mercè Plantada became professor of Lied interpretation.
1948: Eugènia Kemeny Kischner de Carranza started teaching voice lessons at the Conservatory.
1953: Pere Vallribera became director of the Conservatory.
1960: Josep M. Roma was appointed director of the Conservatory's Chamber Orchestra.
1963: Miquel Oquerol started his esthetics and folklore lessons.
1965: Joan Margriñà started teaching dance at the Conservatory.
1983: Ricard Villanueva became the new director of the Conservatory.
1987: Antoni Ros Marbà imparted conducting lessons at the Conservatory.
1991: Anna Albors was appointed director of the Conservatory.
1993: Jaume Torrent became director of the Conservatory.

21 st CENTURY

2000: Evelio Tieles became director of the Conservatory.
2002: Antoni Ros Marbà was appointed artistic advisor of the Conservatory.
2002: Composer Benet Casablancas became director of the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu.
