SINGERS

The importance of the opera scene in Barcelona and the close relationship between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Conservatori has promoted the field of voice education as one of the most important areas of the center. Josep Llausàs was the first voice professor of the Liceo Filo-Dramático and after him a long list follows. In 1866 Josep Arteaga joins de Conservatory as voice meastrino and created an important model in the pedagogical tradition: he was the first student formed at the Liceu to become professor. Other important teachers have been Gonzalo Tintorer –who taught the great Wagnerian tenor Francesc Viñas- Joan Cuyàs, the Italian Giovanna Bardelli, Joaquim Vidal, the French Luisa Pierrik –teacher of Miquel Flota, the only male singer in the class, accepted for his great talent. In the 1930's Dolors Frau joined the faculty, and during the next 25 years, singers like Victòria de los Àngels and Carmen Bustamante (today professor at the Conservatory) emerged from the classrooms of the Liceo. Mercè Capsir, Mercè Plantada and Eugènia Kemeny Kirschner de Carranza joined Dolors Frau in the voice faculty. Professor Kemeny had Francisca Callao and Montserrat Caballé, among her students. The exceptional prestige of these names refers to a pedagogical tradition that remains until today.

DRAMA AND BALLET

The Conservatory was originally a center for music and declamation learning. The art of drama representation has had great importance in the academic activities of the Liceu. There have been professors in different fields, such as: declamation, poetry, languages and even martial arts. Professors from the theater scene have also been part of the center, such as Enric Giménez and Adrià Gual –author and director. Pompeu Fabra taught the classes of prose and Catalan grammar. One of the last plays performed by the Escola Catalana d'Art Dramàtic was Ifigènia by Goethe, accompanied by Enric Granados on the piano. Other declamation performances at the Conservatory included actors such as Enric Borràs and Marta Grau.

Within the specialized areas, ballet was -until a few years ago- a field of great importance, and a sign of the close relationship between the Conservatory and the Teatre del Liceu . Within the dance faculty we can mention Joan Magriñà, who taught at the Liceu for several years. Emma Maleras was also an important figure in the dance school, making of castanets a recognized art. Also worthy of a mention is the ephemeral, but interesting, presence of cinematography in the mid 20 th Century, as part of the academic plan.

STUDENTS

Several illustrious musicians that passed through the classrooms of the Liceu have been mentioned in the paragraphs above: Victòria de los Àngels, Lluís Benejam, Carme Bustamante, Montserrat Caballè, Francisca Callao, Mercè Capsir, Miquel Fleta, Joan Lamote de Grignon, Emma Maleras, Frederic Mompou, Francesc Viñas, Ernest Xancó, Joaquim Zamacois, etc. But the Liceu has had many other instrumentalists, singers, dancers, educators, conductors and composers, whom, without doubt, added prestige with their valuable contributions: Enric Ainaud, Anna M. Albors, Dolors Aldea, Frederic Alonso, Joan Altisent, Manuel Ausensi, Laura Aymerich, Leonardo Balada, Teresa Battle, Marcel·lí Bayer, Josefina Blanch, Ramon Blanchart, Francesc Burrull, Gerard Claret, Lluís Claret, Anna M. The historic significance of some and the high relevance in the contemporary music world of others is the most solid testimony of the important task the Conservatori del Liceu has in its hands. Since 1837 –a year after Beethoven's death, and when composers like Schumann, Chopin, Liszt or Mendelssohn were young artists ready to start revealing their extraordinary talent- until today, the Conservatory has projected its goals towards the future, where the great musical potential of Barcelona and Spain has an appropriate space for its development.
